Direct Perception & the Waggle Dance

The Self-Enacting Image as a Zero-Lag Adjunction

Formalizes ideas from: II. Seven Recognitions VII. The Living Mark
This appendix draws on ecological psychology (Gibson, 1979) and the affordance framework to model direct perception—cases where recognition bypasses symbolic decoding entirely. The mirror neuron connection (Rizzolatti & Craighero, 2004) is offered as a candidate neural substrate, not a proven mechanism. The structural claim is about the distinction between decoding and enacting, which the affordance framework handles independently of mirror neuron theory.

1. The Paradox of the Dance

The framework’s claim that the bee’s waggle dance is a self-enacting image—where the follower does not decode the dance but performs the flight—challenges the standard information-processing model of cognition.

We formalize this using ecological psychology (Gibson, 1979) and the concept of affordances—perceivable opportunities for action that are directly available in the environment without symbolic mediation.

2. Affordances and Mirroring

A “Self-Enacting Image” is a Non-Symbolic Mapping between two systems.

  • Symbolic Mapping: Sensor → Code → Decode → Recognition. (Laggy, lossy).
  • Direct Mapping: Sensor ↔ Sensor. (Instant, full rank).

In the waggle dance, the dancer’s movements are Affordances—visual and tactile structures that directly “evoke” the corresponding motor states in the follower. The “Dance” is an Isometry (distance-preserving map) between the dancer’s memory and the follower’s future action.

3. The Zero-Lag Adjunction

Conjecture: The Self-Enacting Image is a “Short-Circuit” of the Adjunction. It is an interaction where I (Formalization) is bypassed entirely, or where I is identical to S.

  • Symbolic Knowledge: I ≠ S. The loop is “Wide.”
  • Recognition (Symbolic): I ≈ S. The loop is “Resonant.”
  • Direct Perception (Self-Enacting): I ≡ S. The loop is a Fixed Point.

This explains why Symbols (Ouroboros/Om) produce instant recognition. They are Pre-Formalized—they hit the sensor’s integration structure (S) without needing a detour through the instrument’s reasoning side (I).

4. A Candidate Neural Substrate

Mirror neurons (Rizzolatti & Craighero, 2004) fire both when a sensor acts and when it observes another sensor acting. If the mirror neuron account is correct, this provides a neural substrate for the zero-lag adjunction: the follower’s motor system is directly coupled to the dancer’s performance. The structural claim about direct perception does not depend on the mirror neuron account—it holds within Gibson’s ecological framework regardless.

5. Summary: From Decoding to Enacting

  1. Dead Speech requires decoding (high lag).
  2. Living Discourse requires resonance (low lag).
  3. Self-Enacting Images require inhabiting (zero lag).

The bee does not read a map; the bee becomes the flight.
