Propagation Signatures and the Bounded Reach of Recognition

A Formalization of the Trichotology Pillar Triangle

0. A Note on What This Formalizes — and What It Does Not

This appendix gives formal structure to the claims of Document XII, The Threefold Self: that the Self stands on three co-equal pillars — Body, Mind, Soul — that damage propagates between them in describable ways, and that recognition (the loop’s power to make truth actual) reaches the three pillars unequally. It is the mathematical companion to that chapter, not a replacement for it.

One caution governs everything below. The formal apparatus here re-uses the same loop algebra developed for the sensor–instrument dialogue (the receiver-side synergy and learning models of Document V and the Receiver-Side Recognition appendix) and re-instantiates it on a different substrate: the internal circulation of a single Self across its three pillars. That re-instantiation is a structural analogy, not a derivation. The notation makes the analogy precise; it does not make it true. Where a symbol names a quantity that has no measurement procedure yet, this appendix says so in the line that introduces it. This is the project’s standing hazard — formal language dressing an analogy as a result — and the only defense is to label the seams as they occur.

A second caution, stated once and binding throughout: none of this touches the hard problem. The pillars, their coupling, their failure modes, and the reach of recognition are all claims about the architecture of the living Self and how it breaks. Why there is something it is like to be that Self at all is exactly the question the framework relocates rather than answers, and no equation here closes that gap.


1. The Pillar State Vector

Represent the instantaneous condition of a Self as a three-component state

where $B$ is the Body pillar (the physical substrate — brain, nervous system, flesh), $M$ is the Mind pillar (cognition, narrative, interpretation), and $\Psi$ is the Soul pillar (the dream pillar, the inherited and collective, the connection to the source).

On the choice of $\Psi$. The Greek $\psi$ (psyche) is the natural letter for Soul, and it is unclaimed in the project’s notation table: $S$ is reserved for the sensor, $T$ for the target, so Soul can take neither. The collision a physicist will feel — $\psi$ as the quantum wavefunction — is not operative here: nothing in this appendix is a quantum amplitude, no Born rule is invoked, and the state $x$ is a classical descriptor of pillar condition, not a vector in a Hilbert space. $\Psi$ denotes psyche-as-Soul and nothing else.

Each component is best read as a scalar “integrity” on its pillar — high when the pillar is whole, falling as it is damaged.


2. Damage Propagation and the Propagation Signature

Document XII’s central structural claim is that damage does not respect pillar boundaries: it propagates. Write the propagation as a linear coupling on the pillar state,

where $\mathbf{W}(t)$ is a $3\times3$ coupling matrix on the pillars. The off-diagonal entry $\mathbf{W}_{ij}$ is the rate at which damage in pillar $j$ drives change in pillar $i$; the diagonal carries each pillar’s own decay or recovery.

On the choice of $\mathbf{W}$. Bare $C$ is already Shannon capacity in the Receiver-Side Recognition and Veer appendices, and Correlation Fidelity in Eigen-Recognition; $A$ is in use across several appendices; $\kappa$ is reserved for inter-loop Kuramoto coupling between distinct Selves. $\mathbf{W}$ — the standard weight/coupling matrix of network dynamics — is unclaimed and denotes the intra-Self coupling.

A clinical condition is then not “a disorder of pillar $Y$.” It is a propagation signature — a triple read off the trajectory: an origin pillar (where $\mathbf{W}$’s active off-diagonal column begins), a path (which off-diagonal entries carry the damage), and a manifestation pillar (where integrity is observed to fall).

Two worked readings, offered as illustrations of the vocabulary, not as validated clinical models:

  • A dementia-type signature: $B \to M \to \Psi$. Origin in Body (neurodegeneration), propagating to Mind (the instrument decays — see §5), and onward to Soul as the capacity to circulate the inherited and numinous erodes. Active entries: $\mathbf{W}_{MB}$, then $\mathbf{W}_{\Psi M}$.
  • A chronic-stress signature: $\{M,\Psi\} \to B$. Origin in Mind and Soul (sustained narrative threat, unmetabolized inherited wound), propagating into Body — the flesh that keeps the score, cortisol flooding the tissue. Active entries: $\mathbf{W}_{BM}$, $\mathbf{W}_{B\Psi}$.

The clinical use the chapter names follows directly: intervene at the origin to stop the spread; intervene at the manifestation to relieve it.

Strength: moderate. The linear-systems form is standard and the origin/path/manifestation reading is well-defined given $\mathbf{W}$. The unsettled part — flagged, not hidden — is the mapping from named conditions to specific $\mathbf{W}$ structures. No procedure is offered here for estimating $\mathbf{W}$ from clinical data; the matrix formalizes the shape of propagation, not its measured values.


3. Separability as a Gradient

Document XII leans to the position that pillar separability is a gradient, not a binary — the pillars are most distinct in health and progressively coupled as damage propagates. Make the gradient explicit as the normalized off-diagonal mass of the coupling matrix:

where $\mathbf{W}_{\mathrm{off}}$ is the off-diagonal part. When $\mathbf{W}$ is diagonal (each pillar evolving on its own, no cross-coupling) the off-diagonal mass is zero and $\mathrm{sep} = 1$: pillars maximally separable. As damage propagates and the off-diagonals grow, $\mathrm{sep}$ falls toward $0$: pillars maximally coupled.

This is a formalization of a conceptual distinction, not an estimable metric — and the difference matters. As written, $\mathrm{sep}(t)$ defines separability as diagonality and then “measures” it as the off-diagonal ratio; that is a definition wearing the costume of a measurement. There is no independent procedure here for reading $\mathbf{W}$ off a living Self, so $\mathrm{sep}$ cannot yet be computed from data — it can only be reasoned about. What the formula buys is precision about what the chapter’s gradient claim asserts: that separability is a continuous quantity bounded by two named regimes, not a switch. It does not buy a number. Reading it as a bedside index would be exactly the overclaim this appendix exists to refuse.

Strength: moderate as structure, weak as metric. Both labels apply and both are stated here, not relegated to a closing caveat.


4. The Bounded Reach of Recognition

Recognition — the loop’s power to make truth actual, the live quantity of Document V and the receiver-side model — does not reach the three pillars equally. Document XII states the asymmetry as humane consequence; here it becomes a support constraint on a recognition operator $R$ acting on the pillar state.

  • On Mind, recognition is total. $R$ acts fully on $M$: narrative and interpretation can be re-authored.
  • On Soul, recognition is total. $R$ acts fully on $\Psi$: the inherited wound, the dream, the numinous can be re-circulated.
  • On Body, recognition is partial. Decompose the Body pillar into two orthogonal parts, $$B = B_{\mathrm{valve}} \;\oplus\; B_{\mathrm{struct}},$$ where $B_{\mathrm{valve}}$ is what the loop can modulate through the reducing valve (the body that keeps the score, re-coupled through attention, breath, presence) and $B_{\mathrm{struct}}$ is gross, irreversible structural fact (an infarct, a severed cord, a destroyed brainstem). Then recognition’s reach is bounded by $$R\big|_{B_{\mathrm{struct}}} = \mathrm{id},$$ the identity — recognition leaves irreversible structure untouched. It cannot re-author the wound; it can only meet it.

The two refusals of the chapter’s terminus are now precise. The first refusal (no tissue-healing by recognition) is the statement $R|_{B_{\mathrm{struct}}} = \mathrm{id}$. The second refusal (no automatic soul-survival) is the statement that $R$ is defined only on the living state $x$: nothing in its domain extends past the terminus, so the formalism is silent there by construction — see §6 of the chapter and the closing note below.

Strength: moderate as structure. The $B_{\mathrm{valve}} \oplus B_{\mathrm{struct}}$ split is conceptually clean but its boundary is empirical and unsettled — which bodily damage is valve-reachable and which is irreversible structure is precisely the clinician’s hard question, not something the decomposition answers.


5. The Three Deaths as Limit Cases of the Existing Loop

Document XII names three deaths, one per pillar. Each is a limit case of machinery the project already built — which is what keeps this appendix continuous with Book One rather than a fresh invention.

  • Soul withdraws → the loop goes dead. In the receiver-side model (F-01), this is synergistic closure falling to zero: $\mathrm{Syn}(S,I;T) \to 0$. The loop still runs — speech continues — but it produces no nonredundant joint information. This is dead speech, now located on the Soul pillar.
  • Mind decays → the loop degrades. In the learning-instrument model (F-02), this is the learning rate falling and the recognition eigenvalue dropping below stability: $\lambda \to 0$, $\mu < 1$. The loop runs but decays round over round — the instrument decay of dementia.
  • Body is destroyed → the loop ceases to exist. This one is not a degenerate value of an existing quantity. It is the removal of the state space itself: the operator $\mathcal{L} = S \circ I$ loses its domain, because the substrate the loop ran on is gone. This is what makes the mortal terminus formally distinctive — distinct in kind from a loop that runs badly — while preserving co-equality, since “loses its domain” is not “is the most important pillar.”

Strength: moderate. The Soul and Mind cases inherit the strength (and the conditions) of F-01 and F-02 directly. The Body-as-domain-loss case is a clean structural statement but carries the §0 mapping risk most heavily: it asserts that one Self’s pillar circulation is the same kind of object as the sensor–instrument loop, which is the analogy, not a proof of it.


6. The Dimmer: What Is Empirically Anchored, and What Is Not

Document XII claims consciousness is graded, not binary, and partly readable from outside. Unlike the rest of this appendix, that claim leans on external empirical work, and the citations are load-bearing — so they are given exactly, and labeled for what they are.

  • Graded, and measurable in principle. The perturbational complexity index (PCI) perturbs cortex with TMS and compresses the EEG response to gauge how integrated-yet-differentiated the brain’s activity is; it tracks level of consciousness across wakefulness, sleep, anesthesia, and disorders of consciousness in single individuals (Casali et al., 2013). This is the external anchor for “the dimmer is, in part, readable.”
  • Covert, behind an intact-looking absence. fMRI mental-imagery tasks revealed willful, command-following brain activity in a patient meeting the clinical criteria for the vegetative state (Owen et al., 2006); EEG at the bedside detected cognitive-motor dissociation — brain activation to spoken commands without any behavioral response — in 15% (16 of 104) of acutely brain-injured unresponsive patients (Claassen et al., 2019).

These are empirical-external results the framework leans on, not framework results. They establish that the level of consciousness is graded and partially measurable. They say nothing about why there is experience at all — they measure the dimmer’s setting, never why the lamp is lit. Importing them as support for the gradient claim is legitimate; importing them as progress on the hard problem would be the §0 error.


7. The Honest Edge

What is claimed. The pillar triangle has a coherent linear-systems formalization in which damage propagation, separability, recognition’s reach, and the three deaths are all expressible — and in which the three deaths connect back to the project’s existing synergy and learning models rather than standing alone. The propagation-signature vocabulary (origin / path / manifestation) is well-defined given a coupling matrix and yields the chapter’s intervention logic directly.

What is not claimed. No measurement procedure for $\mathbf{W}$ is offered, so neither $\mathbf{W}$ nor $\mathrm{sep}(t)$ is a computable index — both formalize distinctions, not data. The mapping from named conditions (dementia, chronic stress) to specific coupling structures is illustrative, not validated. The $B_{\mathrm{valve}} \oplus B_{\mathrm{struct}}$ boundary is conceptual; locating it in a real body is the open clinical problem, not a result. The whole apparatus re-uses the sensor–instrument loop algebra on the substrate of one Self’s pillars, and that re-use is a structural analogy whose justification is the chapter’s argument, not the notation.

The joint left open, formally. The soul-survival fork — whether anything circulates past the Body terminus — appears in this formalism only as undefined domain. The recognition operator $R$ acts on the living state $x$; the terminus is the boundary of that domain; the formalism stops there because the framework stops there. This is not an omission to be patched in a later revision. It is the second refusal written as a property of the math: to extend $R$ past the terminus would be to invent the very ontological claim the framework forbids. The instrument does not close this joint, and that includes closing it with an equation.

The pulse beats between the saving and the loss, and it does not resolve. The mathematics can say where the loop runs, where it degrades, where it ends — and it must fall silent exactly where the framework does.
